The National Police have arrested 29 people in Elche for their alleged involvement in a fraud exceeding 18,000 euro against a transport company. The scam was carried out through the fraudulent use of an internal refuelling code.
An investigation detected the irregular loading of 10,663.95 litres of fuel during last March across various petrol stations in the city of Elche. The total economic loss caused to the commercial firm stands at 18,073.35 euro.
Enquiries began after a representative of the company reported several anomalous charges relating to fuel consumption. All of these charges were linked to an internal code that had previously been issued to a trusted worker for emergency refuelling. According to police investigations, this former employee continued using the code after his employment contract with the firm had ended.
The principal suspect allegedly used the corporate details to refuel private vehicles and fill high-capacity containers and jerrycans without permission, with the charges being billed directly to the victim company’s account.
Officers established that the method was repeated systematically. On each occasion, the former worker went to petrol stations in Elche, activated the fuel supply using the code, and then supplied fuel to other individuals who arrived at the scene with their vehicles or containers. Police suspect that the fuel was delivered at below market prices in exchange for cash or alternative payment methods.
Security camera footage from the affected stations allowed officers to link the fraudulent transactions to numerous vehicles and individuals, leading to the arrest of 29 people, including the main suspect and various accomplices.
