Elche City Council continues to make progress on the rehabilitation project for the Central Market and its surrounding area, an intervention that will recover one of the most emblematic spaces in the historic centre by integrating and highlighting the existing archaeological heritage.
Within the framework of the archaeological work being carried out at the Arab Baths in Plaça de la Fruita, new spaces within the complex have been documented. These include the woodshed, as originally expected, the oven, a hot water immersion bath, and stairs that connected with rooms located beneath the current street. In addition, the excavation work has expanded knowledge regarding the configuration and operation of the medieval building.
These efforts form part of the standard archaeological research process associated with an intervention of this nature and are fully compatible with the Central Market restoration project. The information gathered will help complete the recovery of the complex and improve its future museum design so that it can be visited and understood by visitors.
The project maintains its goal of balancing heritage protection with the creation of a modern, accessible, and functional market, turning this space into a commercial, cultural, and tourist benchmark for the city. Integrating the archaeological remains will enrich the experience for residents and visitors without changing the main objective of the project, which is to revive the Central Market as a driver for reviving the historic centre.
Restoring the archaeological complex and incorporating it into the future market route will help strengthen the heritage value of Elche city centre, adding a new cultural attraction to a project that combines local trade, heritage, and economic momentum within the same space.
