An expelled officer armed with a stolen firearm entered the Guardia Civil barracks in Llanes yesterday, Wednesday, 5th August, shooting and killing his ex-wife, Laura Cruz Vega, aged 50. The attacker, identified as 49-year-old Dámaso FS, had recently received notification of his dismissal from the force following an internal investigation.
Having previously had his service weapon confiscated due to a conviction for gender-based violence, the assailant stole a colleague’s firearm in Zamora before travelling to Llanes. He entered the facilities through the garage wearing a bulletproof vest. After firing at an officer stationed for gender violence cases—whose bulletproof partition absorbed the shot—he targeted his ex-wife in the senior officers’ office.
During his attempt to flee, the assailant shot a lieutenant from Ribadesella in the knee as the officer rushed to assist the victim. A station sergeant, formerly of the elite Rapid Action Group, engaged the gunman in a garage exchange, mortally wounding him. Paramedics treated the assailant in a mobile intensive care unit for nearly two hours before he died. At least one additional Guardia Civil officer sustained injuries during the incident.
The victim had been stationed in Llanes for over ten years and was a respected figure in the local area. She leaves behind three children, including two 13-year-old twins. The assailant had a long history of violence toward her, including a prior conviction in 2019 and an expired restraining order from December 2025.
Judicial Police from Gijón and local authorities cordoned off the site to conduct an inspection and authorise the removal of the bodies, while local neighbours reported hearing gunfire and widespread alarm throughout the town.
