National Police officers in the municipality of Alicante have arrested a 26-year-old woman for an alleged fraud offence after she reportedly used the bank card of an elderly couple she was caring for to withdraw 40,810 euro from their account.
The investigation was swiftly resolved by officers from the Economic and Financial Crime Unit of the Alicante Provincial Police Station. The probe began when one of the children of the victims, a couple aged 82 and 89, noticed unusual transactions on his parents’ bank account that he and his siblings doubted had been made by their parents.
In the report filed with the authorities, he stated that only he and his siblings had authorisation on his parents’ account. Consequently, they suspected a woman who had been caring for their parents for the past three years. According to a statement from the National Police, the fraudulent activity comprised 110 cash withdrawals carried out between November 2025 and August 2026.
Officers accelerated the investigation after the informant discovered that three cash withdrawals had occurred that very morning at an ATM near his parents’ home. This coincided with a brief, temporary absence of the suspect from the house.
Police officers moved to the area and intercepted the carer around midday as she left the victims’ residence again. During a search of her belongings, officers found 400 euro in cash, which matched one of the cash withdrawals made that morning.
Additionally, she was carrying a receipt from a shop in a commercial centre in Marina Baja for 534.89 euro paid in cash. This amount corresponded to another withdrawal of 600 euro made at an ATM near the establishment shortly before the timestamp on the receipt.
Following these findings, investigators arrested the woman on suspicion of fraud. A subsequent search of her residence led to the discovery of 2,590 euro in cash inside a hidden safe. This money was seized alongside the 400 euro found on her person at the time of her arrest.
Upon completion of the police proceedings, the arrested woman was placed at the disposal of the duty court of instruction in the municipality of Alicante.
