Calpe Town Council has completed the renovation of public lighting in the sports, school, and pavilion zone, achieving a 74 percent reduction in electricity consumption. The project involved replacing older, high-energy luminaires with 77 high-efficiency LED streetlights across key public spaces.
The upgrade covered the surroundings of the Ifach, Gabriel Miró, and Azorín educational centres, as well as the Domingo Lledó Sports Pavilion, Calle Conde de Altea, and adjacent areas. Beyond energy efficiency, the project was designed to improve safety, visibility, and nighttime light quality for residents, students, and sports facility users.
The project had an execution budget of 48,011 euro, financed entirely through a subsidy from the Alicante Provincial Council under its Plan for Energy Savings and Efficiency.
Work focused on substituting obsolete discharge lamps with state-of-the-art LED technology featuring light flow regulation. This allows illumination levels to be adjusted according to time and usage, avoiding excessive lighting during low-traffic hours. The system also includes surge protection and remote control capabilities for real-time operation and monitoring.
Additionally, non-polluting light sources were installed to minimise light pollution, directing light directly towards the ground and avoiding dispersion into the upper hemisphere.
The mayor of Calpe, Ana Sala, and the councillor for infrastructure, Pere Moll, visited the area to inspect the completed works. Sala highlighted that this intervention represents another step towards a more sustainable municipal model, reducing operational costs while improving urban space quality and safety. Moll added that the council will continue working to extend these energy-saving measures to other parts of the municipality.
According to municipal technical estimates, the replacement of these 77 light points will reduce the installed electrical power from 12.38 kilowatts to just 3.22 kilowatts. This will result in an estimated annual energy saving of more than 38,000 kilowatt-hours, alongside a significant drop in municipal carbon emissions.
