Benidorm Town Council has approved phase three of the project to renew public lighting and the existing catenary system along the Paseo de Levante, completing the comprehensive overhaul of the landmark beachfront promenade.
The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, highlighted the importance of the new initiative, emphasizing the significant municipal investment already made during the first two phases to modernise an infrastructure that serves as a key symbol of the town.
This third phase involves an investment of 2,378,176.59 euro, including VAT, covering the section between Avenida de Filipinas and the end of Avenida de Madrid where the seafront promenade concludes.
Pérez stated that the project fulfils commitments made by the local government to residents and the town, taking action due to the central government failing to carry out the works despite having responsibility for the area.
The approval of the project, submitted by the councillor for works and public space, Francis Muñoz, allows the council to begin requesting necessary authorization from the Provincial Coastal Service in Alicante. The project covers land within the public maritime-terrestrial domain and will update facilities originally built in the 1990s by the former Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Environment, maintaining their original layout.
Beyond enhancing safety, reliability, maintenance, and aesthetics, the upgrade will deliver a substantial increase in energy efficiency. Municipal technicians estimate that modernising the system will reduce total power consumption along this section by 37.86%, lowering emissions and improving sustainability.
With this phase, Benidorm will complete the overhaul of the lighting and catenary infrastructure along the entire Levante seafront promenade. The initiative began in 2022 to replace three-decade-old systems affected by wear and tear.
The first phase ran between late 2022 and early 2023, covering the area from Plaza del Torrejó to Avenida de Europa with a municipal investment of 1,972,119.41 euro funded entirely from local resources. The second phase, now complete, renewed the stretch from Avenida de Europa to Calle Metge Miguel Martorell with a budget of 854,885.07 euro provided by European funds through the Benidorm Visión 306 Sustainable Tourism Plan.
Once mandatory approval is received from the Provincial Coastal Service, the town council will draft tender documents to award the construction contract. Pérez urged the central government to process the authorisations swiftly if it does not intend to contribute financial support to the project.
