Torrevieja is set to celebrate European Mobility Week from today, Wednesday 16th September until Tuesday 22nd September. Organised by the Local Police department under the theme “Mobility for all”, the event includes a range of activities with a specific focus on intergenerational equity. The planned initiatives are aimed primarily at children and families, combining road safety education, cycle promotion and sustainable alternatives to private vehicles.
A key highlight of the schedule will take place on Sunday 20nd September. Between 10:00 and 13:00, Paseo Vistalegre will host a main celebration featuring a traffic playground, a cycle circuit, games and various educational activities. The local council has encouraged participants to attend on bicycles, skates or scooters to experience alternative methods of travelling through the city and promote safe shared public spaces.
Later that same afternoon, Torrevieja will observe a “Car-Free Day”. Between 17:00 and 20:00, vehicular traffic will be closed off across the town’s most central streets, leaving the roads exclusively for pedestrians and non-motorised transit. The measure aims to give local residents and visitors a different perspective on the town centre while encouraging reflection on daily motor vehicle use.
The schedule begins earlier in the week with open days at the Children’s Traffic Park, situated at the Local Police facilities. The site will welcome visitors on 16th, 17th and 18th September, as well as on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd September, running from 17:00 to 19:00 each afternoon. During these sessions, children can use the grounds to learn practical road safety skills and traffic rules. The open days also mark the 30th anniversary of the facility, which has spent three decades delivering educational workshops to local school pupils.
Local Police councillor Federico Alarcón emphasised the importance of using European Mobility Week to continue raising awareness from an early age regarding road safety and sustainable, environment-friendly transit habits. He stated that the proposed activities combine education, community living and fun, giving different generations the opportunity to reflect on how they wish to travel and shape the future of Torrevieja.
