Three people have been injured in a traffic accident involving multiple vehicles after a lorry transporting dangerous goods left the road in Cox. The incident occurred on the A-7 motorway as it passes through the municipality in Alicante.
The vehicle was carrying chemical compounds and resin at the time of the crash. The 55 year old lorry driver was among those hurt in the collision, according to the Emergency Information and Coordination Centre and the Alicante Provincial Firefighters Consortium.
Emergency services received notification of the accident at 08.42. One Urgent Medical Assistance Service unit, two Basic Life Support units, and a Non-Assisted Transport unit were deployed to the scene at kilometre 546 in the direction of Murcia.
Healthcare personnel treated the lorry driver for multiple injuries before transporting him by ambulance to the Hospital de la Vega Baja. Two women were also treated by medical staff. One suffered an abrasion to her arm and a bruised leg, while a 24 year old woman sustained a cervical sprain. Both women were taken to the same hospital.
Firefighters applied foam at the site to prevent a resin leak from spreading and catching fire. Emergency response teams sent to the location included a command unit, a heavy urban pump, and a rescue van, along with a sergeant, a corporal, and six firefighters from the Orihuela station.
Following the crash, the Generalitat Valenciana Emergency Coordination Centre activated Situation 1 of the Special Plan for Dangerous Goods due to a fuel spill. This measure is put in place for incidents that can be controlled with available intervention assets but require protective measures for people, property, or the environment.
