Guardia Civil barracks in Torrevieja are set for a renovation after being put out to tender with a budget of 96,080 euro including VAT. The project focuses on three main areas comprising the storage rooms and armoury, the ground floor offices, and the Judicial Police facilities, along with specific work on the ventilation of the holding cells.
This reform was announced by letter on 27th July by the Director General of the Guardia Civil, Mercedes González, to the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón. The mayor had previously requested more personnel and material resources for the main post in Torrevieja, which serves as the headquarters for more than 200 agents. Although the director general kept her promise, the renovation budget is considered insufficient for the building. Inaugurated in May 1992, the Torrevieja Company headquarters features 32 residential units in the rear and offices and holding cells facing Patricio Zammit Street next to the Palace of Justice. Despite past renovations, the facility has many deficiencies and an exterior appearance far removed from a modern police facility serving a city with more than 110,000 registered inhabitants.
The majority of the project budget, amounting to 44,237 euro, is allocated to work in the ground-floor offices. This involves reorganising spaces, renewing finishes, improving access, replacing windows and doors, adding new workstations, and installing a ramp to overcome the current entrance step which lacks accessibility compliance. The renovation of the Judicial Police offices accounts for another 24,953 euro, earmarked for adapting rooms, replacing flooring, windows, doors, and installations, and creating new workstations for officers serving Torrevieja and surrounding municipalities.
Furthermore, the project allocates 14,981 euro to the armoury and storage area by demolishing some rooms to house the armoury, weapons depot, and confiscated material. An amount of 4,556 euro is earmarked for improving cell ventilation, while the remainder of the budget covers 4,329 euro for demolitions, 1,296 euro for waste management, and 1,728 euro for health and safety measures. The work affects approximately 240 square metres of the interior space.
The project also incorporates minor improvements to access and daily operations, including replacing the automatic motor of an sliding door, dismantling the old mechanism, installing new equipment, and programming two remote controls. It also includes anchoring a base for the access barrier and specific ventilation work for the cells with supply and exhaust vents, ducts, and grilles to improve air circulation.
