The Regional Ministry of Health has explained that a scabies outbreak has been declared in San Vicente del Raspeig after linking three confirmed cases in total. These involve two residents at a care home and one external person.
Public Health experts have pointed out that scabies is not a serious illness, but rather a skin infestation caused by a microscopic mite named Sarcoptes scabiei. Although it can be bothersome due to intense itching, it is neither a serious nor a dangerous condition. It is transmitted through direct and prolonged contact with the skin of an infested person, which is why it usually only affects cohabitants or very close contacts.
The treatment is straightforward and generally effective, applied according to the corresponding protocol for those affected and their close contacts. This consists of applying a specific cream or lotion that eliminates the mite and its eggs, alongside oral treatment options.
With appropriate hygiene measures and simultaneous treatment of the affected individuals and their contacts, scabies can be controlled fairly quickly. Authorities emphasised that the infestation is not related to a lack of personal cleanliness, and that early detection alongside health guidelines guarantees a complete and complication-free resolution.
