Adolfo Suárez González

The APTCe political group of Torrevieja has filed a motion requesting that the town hall name part of the main Crevillente road in the city, which leaves the centre and passes the Habaneras Shopping centre, police station and heads towards Quesada, after Presidente Adolfo Suárez González, the first president of the post-Franco era of Spain, who died this week.

APTCe believes that “history proves that Adolfo Suarez is one of the main axes of the transition to democracy”, and therefore “deserves to have a street with his name on the main artery in and out of Torrevieja”.

In addition to the obvious major change in a dictator led country, Suárez also faced a motion of censure, a question of confidence and important issues like terrorism, inflation and unemployment.

Madrid Barajas airport will also be renamed after the former President, “to honour his memory, expressions of recognition and respect for the historical role of the first President of our democracy”, a statement read, recognising his work culminating in “one of the biggest achievements of Spain as a country: the 1978 Spanish Constitution”.
