Real Murcia's Brazilian forward Wellington is currently on loan from Arsenal

Mirandes 0 Hercules 1,
Las Palmas 0 Real Murcia 1

Local teams Hercules and Real Murcia are finishing the season fighting for their lives, but at opposite ends of the table: one to stay in league 2A and the other to be promoted out of it (upwards) into La Liga.

Although it still looks inevitable Hercules will drop down into Segunda B and the regional leagues, the Alicantinos put up a tremendous performance away at Mirandes of Leon and Castille to at least give them faint mathematical hope with one game to go. On 45 points Hercules are still three behind 2nd bottom Rael Jaen, Deportivo Alaves and Girona are on 48, and Real Madrid II on 49.

This has been a very close-fought competitive season in 2A: from Cordoba in sixth place on 60 points down to Mirandes in 16th just outside the drop zone on 50 points, only 10 points separate 10 teams where a win is everything, but very difficult to sustain. Just like Hercules a terrific 1 – 0 win away at Las Palmas gave Real Murcia an excellent chance of the play-offs.

The Murcians now lead the contenders by one point from Barcelona II who can’t go up, Sporting Gijon on 60 points by two and Cordoba on 60 points by three. Also on 60 points are Recreativo Huelva and Las Palmas. It’s all coming down to the last game of the season!

Next Saturday all the final matches will be played at 18.30: for Hercules there is a must-win against Barcelona II to even level it out, but the blue and whites have an infinitely worse goal difference then the others.

There is also a fascinating who-dares-lose-goes-down encounter between Rael Jaen and Deportivo Alaves. Girona are at home to already-promoted Deportivo La Coruna.

Up near the top Real Murcia can control their own destiny if they beat Real Madrid II (the Bernabeu’s ‘B’ team to consolidate their position in the play-offs, this a great attempt to get back in La Liga after several years out in the wilderness.

Gijon are home to mid table Tenerife and las Palmas entertain Ponferradina who are almost safe on 51 points. Similarly Cordoba in 7th are home to Mallorca, also just ahead of the drop zone.

The only other play-off candidate is Recreativo who play Sabadell two points below them.
