As governmental cuts in the health service have finally started to reveal themselves in physical numeric form, data released this week by the Institute of National Statistics shows that the Valencia region is below the national average for the ratio of both doctors and nurses to inhabitants.
In total, Valencia has 23,086 Doctors, which equates to 466 doctors per hundred thousand residents, way below the 501 per thousand of the national average. The situation is similar for nurses, where the region´s 25,154 professionals equate to 508 nurses per hundred thousand residents, compared to 537 per hundred thousand as is the national average.
In fact, Valencia rates sixth from the bottom of the list in terms of doctor to inhabitant ratio, with Madrid leading the way with 631 per hundred thousand, followed by Aragón with 616. However, at the bottom of the list is Andalucía, with 401 medics per hundred thousand citizens.
The statistics also reveal that the total number of registered medical practitioners increased by 1.7% in 2013, a fact that is confirmed in Valencia, where this number increased by 1.18% compared to 2012, increasing the number of licensed physicians in all Valencian provinces.
Despite the below average ratio for nurses, Valencia is fourth in the list in terms of ranking, with Navarra heading the list by some considerable lead, with 961 nurses per hundred thousand, and Murcia is at the bottom with 378 per hundred thousand, considerably below the national average of 537.
The field of psychiatry has seen the biggest growth in the last 2 years, with an increase of almost 74% in the number of practitioners since 2012, with 12,404 now practising. The national pharmaceutical association, physiotherapy, dentistry and optometry have all seen growth in the same period.
