Demolishing Tabarca Properties

A development of new properties which have stood vacant on the island of Tabarca for 15 years will soon be demolished, according to the councillor for planning in Alicante town hall, Miguel Ángel Pavón.

Following a lengthy battle, the properties were deemed illegal by the courts in 2009 and the demolition is scheduled to take place in September. The construction should never have taken place due to coastal planning laws, although they are now described as a “regrettable” episode of town planning by the PP government.

The councillor said that the town hall hopes that, “little by little the urban legality and prevailing public interest over private interests of individuals is restored”.

The planning department is also enforcing the rejection of converting the lighthouse on the island into a hotel.

The cost of the work will be funded by the regional government.
