Fifteen individuals were hurt in a terrible collision on the Agua Amarga route in Alicante. La Alcoyana workers’ committee members said that the number of injuries may have been larger and the injuries could have been worse if the driver hadn’t been “cool-headed, precise, and professional.” On Friday afternoon, March 13th, the C-6 bus, which goes to Alicante-Elche Airport, hit a car head-on. The cause of the crash is still being looked into.
Fifteen people were hurt in the crash, the worst of which was the driver of the car, who shattered his arm when he hit the public transport.
The route is “a real black spot for road safety.” There was a deadly accident there just four years ago. Drivers say that the road is two-way and that there are no safety barriers or warning signs. It also has “constant, heavy traffic that puts the safety of drivers and public transport users at risk.”
The works council says that “no action has been taken to address the underlying causes that make this area a permanent hazard.” Drivers have already given repeated warnings, but nothing has been done to fix the problems that make this area a persistent danger.
The workers want the Valencian Regional Government and the Alicante City Council to take “immediate action.” They say, “Behind every incident, breakdown, or accident, there is a workforce that takes on risks and responsibilities beyond what is required, and that deserves a safe and dignified work environment.” They want “a new fleet, enough infrastructure, and an administration that does what it says it will do.”
