The Mediterranean Environmental Experiences Center (CEAM) has reopened as a tourism hostel, thereby increasing the island of Tabarca’s accommodation options. The municipal facility is being managed by an outsourced company, Esatur, for the first time in its twenty-year history. The service is set to be launched next Wednesday, April 1st . The hostel will provide a blend of cultural, educational, and environmental activities, as well as accommodations, to accommodate both individual travellers and organised groups.
The Alicante City Council had previously stated that its objective in outsourcing the centre was to “improve the availability of accommodations for pre-arranged groups and its role as a hub for cultural and tourist activities on the island.” Consequently, the Alicante-based organisation will oversee the municipal hostel on Tabarca for the next four years, with the potential for two one-year extensions.
Provision of experiences and activities
The project’s objective is to establish Tabarca as a sustainable tourism destination by providing a program of cultural, educational, and recreational activities in addition to accommodations. Snorkelling in the marine reserve, guided tours of the island led by certified guides, gastronomic workshops featuring tastings of local products such as rice dishes and Alicante wines, as well as classes on how to make aioli, and stargazing sessions with telescopes at strategic locations like Punta Falcón are among the experiences that visitors can enjoy.
The hostel has been renovated to ensure the comfort and functionality of its visitors, while also upholding its dedication to sustainability and the circular economy on the island. It provides beds for 20 individuals. School groups are charged €35 per night, while individual travellers are charged €50. Access to the hostel is available for €22 per day for visitors who are solely interested in cultural excursions or activities; all prices include VAT.
Season and hours of operation
The hostel’s operations will vary according to the season. It will be accessible on weekends and for groups that have made a reservation in advance from April to June. During the peak season, it will be open every day from June to September, thereby enhancing the capacity of the accommodation.
The reactivation of the Tabarca Environmental Education Center (CEAM Tabarca) is a clear demonstration of Esatur’s dedication to a responsible tourism model, as emphasised by CEO Jorge Rodríguez. Rodríguez emphasised that the objective is to promote tourism that is grounded in environmental education, highlights the region’s value, and generates experiences that are associated with the Mediterranean.
The CEAM, which was established in 2006, is capable of accommodating up to 20 individuals and was awarded the Blue Center distinction in 2024 in recognition of its environmental and educational initiatives. The reopening of the hostel not only expands the island’s hotel capacity but also enhances Tabarca’s capacity to accommodate organised groups and individual visitors who are interested in educational experiences and connection with nature.
