On Wednesday, April 8th, firefighters from the Torrevieja fire station went to a call saying that the resident hadn’t been seen in ten days. Firefighters used a ladder truck to go to the apartment through a balcony window. There, they found a dead woman in the bathroom.
The event took place on the third story of a building on Calle Diego Ramírez, next to Parque de La Hormiga. The first signs point to the 82-year-old resident, who was originally from Madrid and lived alone, having died a little over a week ago.
Around 4:30 p.m., a neighbour called the police since the woman typically left her apartment every day and “hadn’t been seen for many days.” The neighbour also detected a distinct smell coming from her flat door.
Fire Station at Torrevieja
Every week, the firefighters in Torrevieja undertake at least one rescue operation for persons who live alone and have had an accident at home that makes it hard for them to take care of themselves. This might be anything from falling out of bed to passing out. The firefighters’ rescue, with help from the Guardia Civil and the Local Police, saves lives in most situations.
People often call the Local Police and the Guardia Civil because their senior family members haven’t answered their phones in a while or are having trouble getting in touch with them.
Sadly, there are about 15 of these discoveries per year in the Torrevieja area and along the Vega Baja coast. These people were mainly old, lived alone, and were missing for days before being found.
