The Guardia Civil is investigating a 47-year-old man for allegedly committing an environmental offence after uncovering an unauthorised mechanics workshop in a remote area of Rojales.
Furthermore, owing to the participation of the City Council and the Local Police, the facilities have been shuttered, bringing an end to the activity that had been taking place there.
Agents of the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Guardia Civil of Guardamar launched the investigation when a hydrocarbon spill was discovered in the irrigation ditch of the Comuna de la huerta in the town, prompting a series of enquiries to locate its source.
The investigation focused on facilities near the impacted canal, where it was suspected that a mechanical workshop was functioning without the necessary administrative authorisation.
Inspection
After gathering the requisite proof, the agents conducted an examination of the premises, establishing that the workshop was operational, with multiple automobiles being repaired and the presence of tools and equipment associated with this activity.

During the examination, it was discovered that waste products from mechanical activities, such as batteries and lubricants, were dispersed around the premises, as well as a septic tank with traces of hydrocarbon spills. The Guardia Civil warns that these conditions represent a major risk of hazardous waste seeping into the subsurface, potentially contaminating groundwater and surrounding rivers.
As a result of the operation, the individual in charge has been investigated for potential environmental crimes. Furthermore, administrative sanctions for waste management and illegal conduct have been considered.
The Guardia Civil adds that it is still working to protect the environment and emphasises the need for appropriately managing hazardous waste to prevent harm to the natural ecosystem.
