A 60-year-old man has been arrested by the Guardia Civil for the alleged fraudulent use of bank cards in 25 petty larceny offences and one fraud offence in various municipalities in the Marina Alta region.
The man who was arrested has been released on bail after appearing before a judge. However, he has been subjected to precautionary measures, including the withdrawal of his passport and a prohibition on leaving the country.
It was employed in hospitality establishments.
The detainee’s primary activity, according to the Guardia Civil, was to approach customers in taverns and restaurants while feigning to be on the phone. Subsequently, he would exploit this opportunity to conceal his activities or divert attention from the victims in order to take their possessions without being identified.
The economic harm allegedly exceeded 10,000 euros and was committed in numerous Alicante towns, including Teulada, Moraira, Calpe, and Altea.
Arrest in Moraira
During a routine surveillance operation in Moraira, the officers identified the suspect due to his suspicious behaviour. At that time, it was discovered that he was the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant issued by the judicial authority in Benidorm.
Additionally, investigators have established a connection between him and a burglary that occurred in the same municipality several months ago.
The Guardia Civil confiscated a mobile phone, over 100 euros in cash, and a cap that was purportedly worn to conceal his identity during the robberies at the time of his arrest.
The judicial authority of Dénia has been responsible for the case and has ordered his release with precautionary measures while the investigation is ongoing.
