The Local Police in Santa Pola have arrested a driver accused of “violently” striking an officer with his car. The incident occurred while a patrol was carrying out work on a public road, according to a statement released by municipal sources.
The officer sustained serious injuries as a result of the impact, including a fractured leg. He required emergency surgery to fit a titanium plate to his fibula and an implant in his ankle. After spending several days in hospital, the officer is now recovering at home, although he is expected to be on medical leave for several months.
The events took place while a Local Police patrol in Santa Pola was marking a loose manhole cover that posed a serious risk to traffic. During this time, officers spotted a high-powered vehicle being driven in a reckless manner and performing a prohibited manoeuvre.
One of the officers signalled for the driver to stop. The driver initially slowed down and appeared to be pulling over. However, when only a few metres away from the officer, he allegedly accelerated suddenly with the intent to strike the officer and flee the scene. The officer was reportedly hit with significant force.
The driver then continued his escape, endangering other road users and numerous pedestrians. Reports suggest he came close to hitting several bystanders during the pursuit.
According to the Santa Pola Town Hall, a joint operation was launched to locate the vehicle and the suspect, aided by cooperation from the public. The car was eventually found parked inside a residential estate, partially hidden under a tarpaulin in an apparent attempt to conceal it from the police.
Following further investigations and information provided by witnesses, the Local Police successfully identified the suspect. He was arrested the following morning and subsequently handed over to the Guardia Civil.
Inquiries revealed that the individual was driving without the required insurance and did not possess a valid driving licence for the vehicle involved.
The Local Police of Santa Pola expressed their gratitude for the coordinated efforts with the Santa Pola Guardia Civil, describing them as a sister force whose involvement was essential in resolving the case. They also praised the involvement of local residents, noting that the cooperation of the community in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant is vital when dealing with irresponsible behaviour that threatens public safety.
