The Provincial Council of Alicante has taken action to remove a protective net at the Torrevieja fire station following reports that the installation was trapping and killing swifts. The decision to rectify the situation comes after local environmental concerns were raised regarding the impact of the mesh on the local bird population.
The netting had originally been installed at the fire station facilities in Torrevieja to prevent birds from nesting in certain areas of the building. However, it was discovered that the specific type of mesh used was acting as a lethal trap for swifts, which are a protected species. Upon being notified of the fatalities, the provincial authorities ordered the immediate removal of the structure to prevent further harm to the birds.
Wildlife experts have previously highlighted the importance of Torrevieja as a nesting site for these migratory birds, noting that urban structures must be adapted carefully to coexist with local fauna. The removal of the netting at the fire station is seen as a necessary step in ensuring the safety of the swift population during their active nesting season in the Vega Baja region.
