A man who killed his partner’s cat by beating it to death in the municipality of Torrevieja has been sentenced by a local court. The individual, whose actions have been classified as an act of gender-based violence intended to cause emotional distress to his partner, now faces further legal complications as proceedings for his extradition to Colombia are underway.
The incident occurred in Torrevieja when the man attacked the feline with such force that it resulted in the animal’s death. During the legal proceedings, it was established that the violence directed towards the pet was a deliberate attempt to inflict psychological harm on the woman. This intersection of animal cruelty and domestic abuse has been highlighted by the judicial authorities as a severe breach of the law.
The defendant has been handed a conviction for the crime of animal mistreatment. In addition to the sentence imposed for the death of the cat, the judicial process revealed that the individual was wanted by authorities in Colombia. Consequently, the court in Torrevieja is coordinating with national and international bodies to facilitate his extradition back to his home country to face outstanding legal matters there.
The Guardia Civil had previously been involved in the investigation, ensuring all evidence regarding the attack in the Torrevieja home was documented for the prosecution. The case serves as a reminder of the strict penalties associated with animal abuse and the legal framework that protects victims of gender violence from such indirect forms of aggression.
