The Local Police in Elche have arrested a commercial van driver suspected of severely injuring a pedestrian and fleeing the scene of the accident. The arrest follows a week-long investigation carried out by the Traffic Judicial Police Unit.
The incident dates back to 8th June, when a white van struck a pedestrian crossing the road in the Las Saladas industrial estate. The vehicle reportedly overtook a heavy goods vehicle that had stopped to unload cargo.
The impact left the victim with severe injuries and caused immediate disorientation. According to police investigations, the driver stopped momentarily, but only to reposition a dislodged grille from the vehicle’s left fog light. Following this incident, the driver left the scene without offering assistance to the injured pedestrian or providing any identification details.
Investigating officers initially faced significant difficulties due to a complete lack of information regarding the van’s registration number, make, or model. In response, the Traffic Judicial Police Unit launched an investigation, utilising various methods, including analysing security camera footage from nearby businesses, gathering witness statements, and reviewing commercial and company registers.
The police investigation successfully traced a company linked to the vehicle in the town of Elda. After gathering initial evidence, the Local Police in Elche requested assistance from the Elda Local Police. Officers from both forces then visited the business headquarters to conduct a technical and visual inspection.
During the inspection, officers located the van and verified that the damage on the vehicle matched the evidence collected during the investigation.
With all the evidence compiled, the driver was summoned to the Local Police Central Headquarters in Elche, where he was subsequently arrested.
The Local Police Headquarters in Elche highlighted the vital coordination between the judicial units and operational teams of both municipalities. This collaboration successfully resolved a particularly serious case, ensuring that an accident resulting in major injuries did not go unanswered.
