Renovation works at Elche Central Market are moving forward. According to Elche local council, technical teams today started installing the building’s new roof. This phase of the project is expected to take around two weeks and will complete the upper protection of the property, which is currently visible as an advanced structural skeleton.
Progress is also visible outside the building, as the surrounding urban environment undergoes significant changes. In recent weeks, the perimeter fencing has been extended along the main facade of the market to allow for the repaving of Plaza Menéndez Pelayo, an initiative designed to improve both the appearance and accessibility of the area.
Meanwhile, construction work initiated at the town hall entrance following the removal of sculptures is progressing as planned. The local authority has confirmed that the next milestone will involve digging up the pavement in Plaza de las Flores and its immediate surroundings, ensuring continuity in the comprehensive renovation of the urban axis connecting both spaces.
At the same time, archaeological test drillings are continuing without any major discoveries. Teams are currently focusing on more contemporary historical phases to document and uncover various structures linked to the historic perimeter wall and a potential woodshed identified during previous excavations.
