The National Police have arrested a 64-year-old man in Elche after he allegedly left his mobile phone at the scene of a burglary and later called the device to retrieve it. The suspect, a native of Orihuela who resides in Elche and has a prior criminal record, is accused of committing the break-in during the early hours of 25th June. A high-end bicycle valued at around 1,500 euro and several collectible toy cars were stolen from the property.
In a bizarre turn of events, the suspect accidentally left his mobile phone behind inside the house. Shortly afterwards, whilst National Police officers were at the property alongside the victim, the forgotten phone began to ring. The caller was the alleged thief himself, who was using a phone belonging to a woman he had encountered in the street. He explained that he did not know where he had lost his phone and wanted to arrange a meeting at a specific location to get it back.

Unaware that the police were already handling the situation at the scene, the suspect spoke with the officers, who arranged to meet him at Plaza Primero de Mayo. When the police arrived at the square, they spotted the man sitting on a bench holding a yellow bag. Upon inspecting the bag, officers discovered the stolen collectible toy cars inside.
The man was immediately arrested. Following his detention, he admitted to entering the property alongside his brother. He also stated that his brother was the one in possession of the stolen bicycle, though he did not clarify its exact whereabouts.
