Torrevieja City Council is continuing to strengthen its public services with the launch of the new Mobility Agents unit of the Local Police, whose members took office on Friday, 10th July. This new unit, created to improve urban mobility and optimise traffic regulation, will begin active service once they complete a specific training period that is already underway.
The new unit is made up of a supervisor and 20 mobility agents, who have 10 125cc motorcycles to carry out their duties. The initial contract for the provision of the service will last for one year, with the possibility of three additional extensions, reaching a maximum of four years.
Provisionally, the agents will be located at the Los Balcones Local Police checkpoint until the adaptation of new facilities, located next to the Local Police Headquarters, is completed, which is expected by the end of this year. This is where the unit will be permanently established.
The Mobility Agents will carry out specific duties regarding the regulation, management, and direction of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. This will allow the Local Police officers to dedicate more resources to citizen security and administrative policing duties.
Amongst their main tasks are supporting the Local Police in traffic matters, regulating traffic at the entrances and exits of educational centres, monitoring traffic in the town centre and on the main access roads to the city, as well as controlling the bus lane, parking spaces, loading and unloading zones, and spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility. Likewise, they will provide support in traffic regulation during processions, sporting events, parades, and other crowded events held in Torrevieja.
The Mobility Agents are not part of the Security Forces and Corps, meaning their powers are limited exclusively to matters related to traffic regulation and urban mobility. They do not write crime reports, they cannot make arrests, and they can only issue fines linked to traffic violations within the scope of their competencies.
The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, welcomed the 20 mobility agents and their supervisor who joined this new municipal service, encouraging them to carry out their work with professionalism, proximity, and a vocation for public service. He stated that their work will be fundamental to making Torrevieja a safer, more orderly city with more efficient mobility, adding that the council has full confidence in their capacity and commitment to work every day at the service of all Torrevieja residents and the thousands of people who visit throughout the year.
Furthermore, Eduardo Dolón stressed that the creation of this unit will allow the Local Police to concentrate more officers on proper citizen security duties, while the Mobility Agents specialise in managing traffic, facilitating circulation, and improving the daily functioning of the city. He concluded that it is a measure that will directly affect the quality of life of citizens and result in a better-organised, safer Torrevieja that is prepared to face the significant growth it is experiencing.
