A fourth person has been arrested in Gandia following the abduction of a newborn baby girl from the Francesc de Borja Hospital. The National Police detained the individual as part of an ongoing investigation led by the Family and Woman Welfare Unit (UFAM) from the Gandia police station.
The incident began when a seven-day-old baby girl was taken from the neonatal unit of the hospital in Gandia immediately after a registered visit from her parents. The baby had been placed under the formal care of the regional government (Generalitat Valenciana) after testing positive for cocaine at birth. It is believed that the father managed to smuggle the child out of the medical facility hidden inside a sports bag.
Following a public appeal for information, a local resident spotted the father at the Plaza de La Marina in El Grau de Gandia and alerted emergency services via 112. National Police officers subsequently arrested the father at the scene and located the infant, who has since been readmitted to the hospital to be treated for drug withdrawal symptoms. The mother and a 20-year-old sister of the baby had already been arrested for their suspected involvement in the child’s abduction. This latest arrest brings the total number of individuals detained in connection with the case to four.
