Torrevieja City Council has launched a tender for a contract to install an immersive winter-themed light show in the Parque de las Naciones during the 2026-2027 Christmas season. Put out by the Department of Public Lighting, led by Concha Sala, the proposal is now open for bidding. It details the project as an artistic recreation of a light show simulating sculptural ice figures for family entertainment.
Conceived as an exhibition for all audiences, the contract forms part of the special Christmas cultural programme aimed at boosting Torrevieja’s cultural and tourist activity over the winter period. The contract costs 75,000 euro (VAT included). This expenditure comes on top of the planned 344,000 euro set aside for lighting decorations for the town’s patron saint festivals and Christmas.
The initiative was attempted last year, but the City Council ran out of time to process the contract, leading to its revival for this year. Although it is an open tender, it is clearly geared towards a specialised sector of professional lighting experts who deal in immersive Christmas and winter light parks.
The planned route consists of an outdoor walkway where visitors can view illuminated animals associated with cold or arctic climates. The contract specifications mention bears, seals, Arctic foxes, reindeer, walruses, owls and snow leopards, though it permits equivalent solutions provided they maintain the winter theme.
The walk will be divided into two environments, featuring a celestial vault created with warm garlands draped over vegetation to simulate a starry sky without light pollution. Spotlights installed in the trees will recreate an aurora borealis, programmed to mimic the play of colours of the natural phenomenon. A soundscape will also run throughout the entire walk.
The exhibition is intended to run from 4th December 2026, covering the patron saint festivities, through to 6th January 2027. Although not explicitly announced by the municipal government team, the initiative appears to decentralise the significant investment the City Council makes in Christmas decorations traditionally concentrated in the Plaza de la Constitución and adjacent streets, which accounts for over 350,000 euro.
The base budget for the tender is 74,950 euro including VAT, with 24,390 euro earmarked for decorative elements. The minimum order comprises 39 figures: two foxes, four Arctic wolves, three puffins, eight adult bears, four bear cubs, two Arctic seals, three reindeer, one walrus, eight adult penguins and four penguin chicks. The adult bears represent the most expensive figures at 6,400 euro total, alongside the adult penguins at 5,200 euro.
