Guardia Civil officers have seized 60 kilograms of illegal cut tobacco found hidden inside the boot of a vehicle in the town of Cocentaina.
The operation took place on 10th August during a public safety checkpoint established as part of the local patron saint celebrations. Officers stopped a car that raised their suspicions.
Given the behaviour of the driver, officers decided to inspect the contents of the vehicle. Upon opening the boot, they discovered a large number of bags containing cut tobacco.
The seized goods were taken to official police facilities for cataloguing and weighing, where officers confirmed a total of 60 kilograms of illicit tobacco.
The driver of the vehicle, a 48-year-old man, has been reported for an administrative infraction under Organic Law 12/95 on the suppression of contraband, relating to the possession, transportation, and potential unlawful trade of regulated prohibited goods.
This type of infraction carries financial penalties starting at a minimum of 2,000 euro, with fines increasing according to the total value of the seized goods. Depending on the circumstances, such acts can also constitute a criminal offence carrying prison sentences ranging from one to five years.
