Hotels across the Comunitat Valenciana were the third most popular destination for domestic holidaymakers during August, following behind Andalusia and Catalonia, according to official figures released by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE).
Accommodations within the region accounted for 12.8 per cent of total overnight hotel stays by residents in Spain. Across the country, hotel rates rose by 6.3 per cent compared with August 2025, marking the sharpest year-on-year increase recorded since April of the previous year. This latest rise reflects an ongoing climb in hotel charges, following a 5.9 per cent increase in July, extending the continuous upward trend to 62 consecutive months.
Over a broader period between August 2022 and August this year, Spanish hotel prices have increased by 27 per cent, with average daily rates jumping from 127.91 euro to 166.90 euro.
Total overnight hotel stays nationwide reached 48.7 million in August, up 1.4 per cent year on year. Combined with a 0.3 per cent rise recorded in July, the Spanish hotel industry brought the peak summer season to a close on positive figures. Sector turnover in August averaged 166.90 euro per occupied room, an increase of 7.3 per cent compared to the same month last year. Revenue per available room also improved to 133.10 euro, rising from 124.40 euro in August last year and 116.90 euro in August 2024.
International visitors proved pivotal during the month, recording a 2.8 per cent rise in overnight stays, which offset a 1.1 per cent fall in stays by domestic travellers. Across the first eight months of the year, nationwide overnight bookings grew by 1.5 per cent year on year to reach a record high of 257.43 million, driven by a 0.4 per cent increase from domestic guests and a 2 per cent rise from non-residents.
Among domestic travellers, Andalusia took the top spot in August with 24.4 per cent of total overnight bookings, followed by Catalonia with 14.9 per cent and the Comunitat Valenciana with 12.8 per cent. Non-resident visitors favoured the Balearic Islands, which claimed 33 per cent of total foreign bookings, ahead of Catalonia at 20.6 per cent and the Canary Islands at 18.2 per cent.
By specific tourist area, Mallorca led the country with more than 8.5 million overnight stays, whilst the municipal destinations recording the highest totals were Barcelona, Madrid, and Calvià. Overall hotel occupancy reached 76.1 per cent of available beds, representing an increase of 1.1 per cent compared with August 2025.
British holidaymakers remained the primary driver among foreign source markets, generating 25.5 per cent of all overnight stays by non-residents in Spain during August, meaning one in four international tourists was from the United Kingdom. Germany followed with 14.5 per cent of international stays, whilst visitors from France, Italy, and the Netherlands accounted for 11.1 per cent, 6.2 per cent, and 4.8 per cent, respectively.
