Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is scheduled to appear in Moncloa at 9am today, Monday 5th October, for an institutional declaration to announce his decision regarding a potential early general election, which could take place on 29th November. No questions will be permitted during the appearance, and Moncloa has cancelled the scheduled agenda for today.
The possibility of this electoral advance has been pointed out throughout the weekend following the rejection in Parliament during an extraordinary session of the two Royal Decree-Laws intended to facilitate access to housing, which received votes against from PP, Vox and Junts. Following the defeat of both rules, Moncloa sources confirmed on Friday that the Prime Minister would dedicate the weekend to analysing what happened in Congress, keeping citizen reaction on the streets in mind to decide whether to finally adopt the decision to bring forward general elections.
Indeed, these sources admitted on Friday that no option could be ruled out, including the electoral advance, which some voices within the Council of Ministers had been pointing towards in the event that the decrees fell through, as has ultimately happened. Specifically, they went so far as to give a 99% probability that Sánchez would call voters to the polls immediately if the decrees failed. These measures included the ban on evictions, the limitation on housing purchases by vulture funds, as well as purchase aids and tax bonuses for owners in Madrid.
