The governing team of Torrevieja Town Hall has rejected accusations from the Socialist Group regarding the management of grants intended for housing solutions for people in a situation of special vulnerability, and has regretted that such a sensitive social issue is politically used to convey a partial image of municipal action.
The Department of Social Welfare has managed and paid a total of 140.350€ in direct grants corresponding to the 2025 call, destined both for rent payments and urgent stays in hotel establishments for families experiencing extremely serious situations. According to the governing team, these resources have translated into effective attention to the housing needs of neighbours in the municipality.
The governing team indicates that the difference between the granted subsidy and the amount finally justified responds to the application of the accreditation and control requirements established for these grants. Justification requires documentation to verify payments and their correspondence with beneficiary persons and lease contracts, and the Town Hall must verify these points and cannot validate expenses lacking the required accreditation. The existence of social needs demands a response from the administration but also a management that guarantees each grant complies with the call’s conditions.
Faced with accusations of inaction by the local socialists, the Department of Social Welfare has enabled mechanisms to facilitate processing and resolve complex situations within the foreseen possibilities. In those cases where both the applicant and the landlord formally authorised it, the Town Hall arranged for direct payment to the property owner, aiming to facilitate the application of the rent grant and contribute to preventing the loss of accommodation. This action, according to the municipal government, reflects work orientated towards finding solutions for families, accompanied by the necessary documentary verification to manage public funds.
The governing team has demanded that the socialists address this issue with rigour, without demagogy, and incorporate into their assessment both the grants effectively paid and the conditions governing their justification. In their view, focusing the debate solely on the amount to be reimbursed offers a partial view and omits actions carried out by Social Welfare to address housing needs.
From the municipal government, it is rejected that the work carried out by the department is discredited without taking into account the care provided, the enabled solutions, and the control obligations to which the administration is subject.
The Town Hall of Torrevieja has indicated that it will maintain its participation in state and regional housing calls and will continue working to facilitate housing solutions for the households in most need, with responsibility, transparency, and adequate justification of public resources.
