Bigastro plans

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, is offering seven and a half million euro for the tender of work to improve the supply of drinking water through Beniel and the municipality of Orihuela, with 80% of the funding coming from European grants.

The project involves the construction of a new network of pipes, tanks and machinery in the town of Beniel, where residents have faced years of poor supply due to the antiquated infrastructure in place.

As a result of the work, the supply of water will be significantly improved in the towns of Bigastro, and the pedanias in the south west of the city of Orihuela, including Hurchillo, Arneva and Desamparados.

A new “buffer” reservoir will serve those towns, constructed from reinforced concrete and have a capacity of 5,100 cubic meters, to be located in the El Mojón area of the Sierra del Cristo, to the south of Beniel, in the municipality of Orihuela.

The delivery network will include 14 kilometres of new pipelines, 11.5 kilometres of which will be around Bigastro, and 3 kilometres in the Beniel area, connected by branch pipelines to the existing network.

The works, which is overseen through the Canales del Taibilla operation, will have a lead time to completion of within 12 months. Canales del Taibilla provides drinking water to 79 municipalities in the regions of Albacete, Alicante and Murcia, serving 2.4 million inhabitants normally, increasing to 3 million people in the summer.
