ORIHUELA’S ANNIVERSARY CLOCK TO BE REFURBISHED

The Councillor for Infrastructure, Victor Ruiz, said last week that work is about to start on the refurbishment of Centennial clock which is situated in Orihuela’s Centuria Romana Square. The contract will last approximately three weeks and will cost taxpayers 16,200 euros.

So for the first time in 20 years the chimes of the Anniversary clock will ring out as they did at the start of the last century.

This clock was first purchased by the city council in 1900 for just 2,300 pesetas. It was originally situated in the town hall of the Plaza Nueva in 1901 where it stood until 1978 but in Romana Square it has now been deteriorating since 1999, a product of "the apathy and indifference of successive municipal officials, " said Ruiz.

The councilor says that many of the original parts are broken and the much of the original machinery is now housed in a wooden box along with the clock hands which have been damaged by the sun and rain so it will function by using an automated time station without using many of the original parts.

Ruiz says that his department is committed to restoring the emblematic sites in the town, the first of which will be the clock. He says that the site has long been a site that has been targeted by delinquents which he now hopes to rectify and in so doing cleaning up the environment and eliminating much of the graffiti and vandalism in the city.

The clock is situated just in front of the Episcopal Palace at its junction with the River Segura.
