This weekend three of Club Natacion Torrevieja’s swimmers got the season off to a blast. After training hard in the sea all summer rewards were forthcoming in the “1st Traversia a Nado Marina d’Or”, organised by Olympic swimmer Kiko Hervas.
On Saturday 27th September swimmers from across Spain came together to compete in two races the 9.5km swim and the 4km swim. Vicki Connolly and daughter Zoe Connolly raced alongside companion Beth Alterbas in the 4km swim to celebrate Beth’s 70th birthday.
The race commenced at 4pm, and after a earlier calm morning the wind got up and created strong waves and a swim against the tide and wind for the whole 4km. To add to this the sea was full of jelly fish. Not to be defeated all three Torrevieja swimmers battled on in the hardest swim they had ever encountered.
Zoe excelled herself as the youngest swimmer in the competition winning 25th place overall and 10th in the under 25yrs (Zoe is only 13). Continuing in this manner bot Beth and Vicki came first in their categories, Beth first in over 50 yrs and Vicki 1st in the 40-49 yrs age group. Whilst presenting awards during the evening the whole room joined in singing “Happy Birthday” to Beth in both Spanish and English.
The team now continue to race in the new seasons calendar of events alongside the rest of Club Natacion Torrevieja.
