Partido Popular spokesperson in Torrevieja, Joaquín Albaladejo, has raised a notion through the government to declare Torrevieja as a city with solidarity with Alzheimer´s.
Albeit an institutional gesture, the aim of the title, “Ciudad Solidaria con el Alzheimer”, is to raise awareness of the plight of those who suffer the condition, both directly and indirectly, and serve as an example to other municipalities to support the same.
Albaladejo also stressed that by recognizing the status supports the initiative of the CEAFA, the Confederación Española de Asociaciones de Familiares de Personas con Alzheimer y otras Demencias, explaining how Alzheimer´s is the most prevalent type of dementia, that currently affects 3.5 million people in Spain.
He continued to explain that Alzheimer´s is a socio-sanitary issue, for which there is still no effective treatment, and yet it affects not only those who suffer the symptoms, but their families, friends and carers.
The problem of the disease is expected to double in the next 20 years, mainly due to the higher life expectancy of the population, with direct and indirect costs labelled at around 30,000 euro per year. The City of Torrevieja therefore wishes to record its concern towards this major problem declaring a “City of Solidarity with Alzheimer´s”.
Part of the former railway station buildings in Torrevieja house one of the main Alzheimer’s resource and help centres in the area, run by the AFA, or La Asociación De Familiares Y Amigos De Enfermos De Alzheimer De Torrevieja, which has been operating from the city for the last 10 years..
