The incident occurred on Monday in the Valencia town of Cortes de Pallás

An off duty Guardia Civil officer managed to avert a major disaster this week, when he successfully blocked a main road minutes before a landslide sent rubble tumbling below.

The incident occurred on Monday in the Valencia town of Cortes de Pallás, when the officer was driving along the road and noticed a number of small rocks and a quantity of dust.

Having driven the route for the last five years the officer was aware of small landslides reported recently and so he quickly stopped his private vehicle and manoeuvred it into position in order to block the road.

He then identified himself to the following vehicles as a Guardia Civil officer and explained the reasons for his actions. One of those vehicles was carrying a local councillor who called the municipal service staff to assist at the scene.

Within minutes, the land did indeed begin to fall cutting the road off completely and damaging a number of vehicles nearby, as well as electrical equipment.

One local resident had to be flown out be air ambulance due to an unrelated medical condition but ambulances were unable to access the area due to the blockage, but the swift actions of the officer no doubt saving lives of people who could well have ended up under the rubble.
