The long-awaited transformation of Denia’s public transport system has taken a significant step forward as the first of the new urban buses began trial runs through the town streets on Friday, May 8th. The white vehicle, emblazoned with red “Bus Dénia” branding, was spotted navigating key routes to test the practicalities of the new service before it officially launches to the public in June.
The trial began shortly before 10:00 am when the first bus emerged from the depot on Camí del Cementeri. Throughout the morning, the vehicle was seen passing along Avenida de València, turning into Avenida de Gandia, and traversing the length of Miguel Hernández from Plaza de Cholet. The route continued through Plaza de Benidorm and along the seafront, eventually coming to a halt at the Explanada Cervantes stop by the harbour.
This testing phase, which will involve all seven buses in the new fleet, is set to continue throughout the month of May. During this time, the vehicles will run without passengers to allow technicians to identify potential issues. Key areas of focus include navigating narrower streets, such as Calle Colón, and determining if any existing parking spaces need to be removed to allow for safe passage.
Javier Scotto, the Councillor for Security, explained that these trials are essential for verifying which bus models are best suited for specific lines based on their size. The period also serves as vital training for drivers to familiarise themselves with the routes, turning circles, and stop locations. Additionally, the month-long trial allows residents of Dénia to become accustomed to the new fleet and the updated visual identity of the local transport service. While this specific bus is expected to serve the route to the hospital, final assignments will be confirmed following the results of these technical assessments.
