The body of a 78-year-old Swiss man who was snorkelling was found floating in the waters of Calpe on Monday afternoon, 15th June. The discovery took place in the rugged coastal area that separates Cantal del Roig beach from Cala del Morelló. This tragic event marks the return of swimmer fatalities to the Marina Alta region at the height of the summer season.
The body was recovered by beachgoers who happened to be in the area and swam out to bring him to the shore. A SAMU medical team arrived shortly before 6:00 pm and performed resuscitation manoeuvres, but their efforts were in vain as the man had already passed away.
Due to the difficulties presented by the steep and rugged terrain, a special operation had to be organised. This required the deployment of a mountain rescue team from the Guardia Civil. The removal of the body was not carried out until nightfall, several hours after the victim was initially found. Officers from the Calpe Local Police were also deployed to the scene of the incident.
