A new park and ride facility will open to the public today, Friday, 31st July, on a temporary municipal plot in Torrevieja. Located between Avenida de la Estación, Calle Ciudad de Barcelona, Camino del Acequión, and the N-332, the project provides a conditioned area of 7,048 square metres to expand parking options and promote more orderly local mobility.
Work on the temporary site included clearing, levelling, and cleaning the land, alongside the removal and proper management of waste. A layer of gravel was supplied, spread, levelled, and compacted across the site, and two access fords were constructed with corresponding finishing touches.
Vehicle access will be strictly through the urban road network via Avenida de la Estación and Calle Ciudad de Barcelona. Because the intervention is superficial and reversible, the previously undeveloped municipal plot can be put to practical use without permanently altering its urban planning designation. The granular surface solution allows vehicle traffic and parking while maintaining the permeability of the ground.
By opening this car park, Torrevieja City Council is expanding the available parking supply near the town centre. The initiative aims to reduce instances of inappropriate parking, improve road and pedestrian safety, and encourage a more fluid traffic flow.
In parallel, the local authority has planned four additional park and ride facilities near the city centre and the port area. These upcoming sites will add more than 3,900 spaces, including accessible spaces, complete with proper access and signage. Their opening is intended to offset the reduction in parking spaces resulting from the transformation of the port and to improve pedestrian connections to the city centre.
