The Valencian Community recorded 64 deaths attributable to high temperatures during the first fortnight of August 2026. Almost 80 per cent of these deaths, 51 in total, occurred during the second week of the month, according to estimates from the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Carlos III Health Institute.
From 1st to 16th August, a total of 1,213 heat-associated deaths occurred across Spain. Of these, 64 correspond to the Valencian Community, where the province of Alicante recorded 28 deaths, Castellon registered 19, and the province of Valencia recorded 17.
Data from MoMo indicates that the deceased included 33 men and 31 women. The majority were over 65 years old, which is the most vulnerable age group during prolonged extreme heat episodes.
Week 33 of the year, spanning between 10th and 16th August, concentrated the highest mortality. A total of 51 people died from causes attributable to high temperatures during those seven days. In the previous week, week 32, between 3rd and 9th August, 9 deaths were recorded. The remaining four deaths occurred between 1st and 2nd August.
Looking at specific days, mortality peaks were recorded on 15th and 16th August, with eight deaths on each day. On 14th August, 9 deaths were attributed to the heat, whilst 7 deaths were recorded on 13th August. Six daily deaths were registered on 10th, 11th, and 12th August. The remaining deaths occurred between 1st and 9th August, with lower daily figures.
The total for the first fortnight of August 2026 exceeds the figures for the same period in 2025, when 47 heat-related deaths were recorded in the Valencian Community, 17 fewer than this year.
However, the situation was less severe than in 2024. Between 1st and 16th August of that year, MoMo estimated 150 deaths attributable to high temperatures in the Valencian Community. That figure was more than double that of 2026, reflecting how the impact of extreme heat can vary greatly from one summer to another depending on the intensity and duration of heatwaves.
The latest statistics allow for an evaluation of the recent evolution of heat-related mortality in the Valencian Community, whilst demonstrating that people aged over 65 remain the group most exposed during prolonged episodes of extreme temperatures.
