The Town Hall of Torrevieja has appealed to public civics with a new campaign titled “La casa de todos”, aimed at encouraging residents and visitors to care for the city as if it were their own home. María José Ruiz, the councillor for Urban Cleaning, presented the initiative, which seeks to promote civic responsibility, the protection of the urban environment, and the correct use of municipal cleaning and waste collection services.
The campaign is built around a straightforward premise: Torrevieja is everyone’s home. It invites people to apply the same habits of cleanliness, order, respect, and coexistence in public spaces that they practise daily inside their private properties. The core of the initiative features a promotional video starring a mother and her daughter, highlighting the contrast between how people look after the interior of their houses versus undesirable behaviours sometimes seen on the streets, such as discarded rubbish, cigarette butts, animal waste, or littering outside designated areas.
The emotional high point of the clip arrives when the young girl asks her mother why, if she is taught to care for things at home, the same care is not shown in everyone’s shared home. This perspective from a child encourages adults to reflect on the consistency of their everyday actions.
Councillor María José Ruiz emphasised that the campaign avoids reprimands or fines, opting instead to inspire self-reflection. She noted that the goal is for every neighbour to consider whether they would tolerate certain street behaviours inside their own houses, reminding residents that street cleaning relies on a shared commitment to communal living rather than just municipal resources.
While the town council allocates significant human and material resources to maintain public areas daily, citizen collaboration remains essential to keep Torrevieja clean and pleasant. The campaign also highlights proper waste management, reminding the public to use correct bins and containers. Organic and residual waste must be disposed of between 20:00 and 23:00 hours.
To prevent furniture, bulky goods, and pruning debris from being abandoned on public thoroughfares, Torrevieja provides a free door-to-door collection service that can be requested by telephone. Additionally, citizens can make use of a fixed eco-park and two mobile eco-parks for specialised waste.
Designed as a multiplatform initiative, “La casa de todos” will feature prominently across digital platforms and municipal graphic displays, driving home the final message that caring for Torrevieja means caring for everyone’s home.
