Moderate storms have swept across the Vega Baja region from south to north, bringing intense electrical activity and rainfall reaching up to 33 litres per square metre in parts of the coast and south of the region.
A lightning strike caused a fire in the Los Balcones residential area of Torrevieja. Firefighters from the Torrevieja park and the Local Police responded to Calle Levante, extinguishing a blaze that affected six palm trees and several lighting and telephone poles near the car park of the Torrevieja University Hospital.
Rainfall totals across the region reached up to 33 litres per square metre, as recorded by the Orihuela Centro pluviometer, according to the Valencian Association of Meteorology station. Torre de la Horadada registered 24 litres, while official stations at La Pedrera and Jacarilla recorded 18 and 13 litres respectively by mid-afternoon. Project Mastral’s pluviometer at the Torrevieja salt flats registered 14 litres. These beneficial rains arrive while the average annual rainfall barely exceeds 250 litres per square metre across municipal areas with three months remaining in the year.
The region remained under an orange weather warning until eight in the evening. Emergency services reported no significant incidents of water accumulation on public roads, although minor delays occurred in usual spots across Orihuela Costa, Pilar de la Horadada and Torrevieja. The Provincial Fire Consortium later reported handling six interventions between 15:30 and 19:25 hours due to rain and wind, including incidents in Orihuela, Crevillent, Elche and Torrevieja. Authorities confirmed that operations in Elche and Torrevieja involved minor fires triggered by lightning strikes, alongside reports of precarious branches, facade debris and a fallen lamppost.
