The month of August comes ladened with fiestas in Mil Palmeras. They started at the end of July with fireworks and a parade through the streets by the Musical Union of Horadada.
Through the streets actually means surrounding la Plaza de Mil Palmeras on which most of the activities have been focussed.
Not only has there been singing and dancing but most recently the townsfolk were out in numbers celebrating a religious activity in honor of la Virgen de la Alegría (Our Lady of Joy). Last Sunday's festivities started on the beach, they passed through la Capilla de las Mil Palmeras, the local church, where, only a couple of hours earlier, the Royal British Legion had been commemorating the Centenary of the outbreak of World War 1. The colourful floral tributes then moved on to la Plaza de Mil Palmeras where hundreds of local residents were out in force to party the weekend away.
The Councillor for Fiestas, Asunción Sánchez, said that this year's turnout was spectacular. She thanked the Association of Residents of Mil Palmeras for getting especially involved in the organization and management of all activities.
This year there were two concerts in the plaza, "Mecanlife" and "Ciudad Canalla", which were attended by more than a thousand people who all enjoyed good atmosphere and music. There were performances from the Manoli Fernandez School of Dance as well as the Marina Limarenko Flamenco and Friendship group, the band "Fifth Chord", and the election of Mister and Miss Mil Palmeras 2014, which involved the Municipal Theatre Workshop.
For the children there was face painting, storytelling, a facial makeup workshop and a demonstration of a Chinese Dragon Dance, all providing a comprehensive programme of activities that was enjoyed by residents and tourists alike.
