For the third time in five years the Guardia Civil have again broken up a Torrevieja gang involved in drug trafficking throughout the region. Known as the "Clan de Los Tote" seven men and two women, all of Spanish nationality, have been arrested and were due to appear in a local court during the coming days.
The arrests took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning and were carried out under heavy security. On the following day the agents responsible for the operation were then able to obtain judicial authorization to enter a number of properties on la calle Clemente Gosálvez in the town centre district of Calvario where they were able to confiscate an undetermined amount of heroin and cocaine, as well as drug related equipment and money.
The operation remains open and is expected to result in further arrests and searches. The Court of Instruction No. 2 has been put on standby to deal with the arrests while the police action continues.
According to sources, the Civil Guard, who were assisted by several local ploce units, had been aware of the continuous movement of drug dealers in the building in recent months. Agents continually monitored the area building up their knowledge of the visitors identities.
The main detainee, a 43 year old identified as MRFF, is said to be well known to the Security Forces in Torrevieja. Last Tuesday's arrest is the fourth time in the last five years that he has been detained. The alleged leader of the clan, all previous detentions have been for the offense of being a member of a criminal organization as well as crimes against public health, the obstruction of justice and possession of weapons.
He was currently remanded on bail awaiting three judicial proceedings and trial.
In August 2010, 16 people were arrested from this same organization together with the seizure of five kilos of cocaine and then again, in September 2012 the police dealt a further blow to the gang with the arrest of a further ten members.
