Guardamar's archaeological heritage has been hit on several occasions in recent months by vandalism, most recently the fence bordering the path of the castle which has been has been broken and thrown into a ditch.
It is thought that the damage was caused by a group of youngsters who were all drinking, also leaving behind them a trail of bottles.
This is not the first time that such damage has occurred but at this time, because of the summer holidays, it is not known when the cleaning and repair operation will be able to take place.
The local police say there are many other parts of town with some environmental and archaeological value that are need of repair. Damage has also been done to the concrete wall on the side of the old walled town, the path into the woods and the street furniture in la calle La Redonda. Also, they say, the canal next to the town wall is also full of plastic and glass bottles consumed by the youths in an area where the town attracts thousands of visitors and tourists.
Although the security forces report that they have strengthened their presence in the area with more controls it seems that they are unable to prevent further episodes of vandalism against property and public areas that seem to be going on continuously.
The Councillor for Public Safety, Felipe Aldeguer said that "the castle is a symbol that requires respect from citizens of all ages. No amount of vandalism is acceptable, all damage affects our heritage, and that is why the local police are obliged to take appropriate measures. "
